Platinum CEO Tom Gores Tells SBJ ‘No Limits’ Attitude is Driving Pistons Renaissance

The Sports Business Journal recently highlighted Platinum Equity Founder and CEO Tom Gores’ leadership of the fast-rising Detroit Pistons across two content pieces.
In an exclusive Q&A, Gores, who acquired the Pistons in 2011, discusses the team’s historic brand, the first-round playoff victory over the Orlando Magic and their rise to the top of the Eastern Conference standings after enduring a 14-68 record just two seasons ago.
The Q&A was published just a few days before the Pistons’ season came to an end in a Game 7 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in front of a sellout crowd at Little Caesars Arena.
Despite the disappointment, the fact remains that in just two seasons, the team has gone from 14 wins to 44 to 60 and were within one game of the Eastern Conference Finals. The team’s young core is still emerging while still only scratching the surface of its potential.
Gores attributes the team’s dramatic turnaround to a “no limits” philosophy and total organizational alignment. He highlights the impact of team president Trajan Langdon and coach J.B. Bickerstaff following a significant franchise reset.
“The message was that there are no limits,” Gores told SBJ when asked about his message to the team.
“I’m a kid from Flint (Mich.), and I’ve seen how people try to put limits on you. I told them we weren’t going to do that here. No excuses, no ceilings and no complacency just because we’d made the playoffs.”
Off the court, Gores told SBJ the Pistons brand is in “great shape.”
“To me, brand is about walking the talk, and right now we’re actually living the things we say we care about – excellence, grit, all of it,” Gores said. “We’re a storied franchise, which is a big advantage, but we’ve also made a lot of progress in how we present ourselves and connect with people.
“With the momentum we have, I couldn’t be happier with where the Pistons brand sits and the position we’re in to keep building on it.”
Pistons President of Business Operations Melanie Harris has played a major role in the team’s off-the-court success. She is one of three women to hold such titles despite never previously working for a team. The Pistons report significant growth when it comes to ticket sales and retail sales, corporate partnerships and social media engagement. Gores described the process to SBJ that led to her hire in September 2024.
“Most of the candidates were from sports,” Gores said. “The search firm kept saying it was important you’d worked for a team before, but Melanie was unique. What impressed me was how rounded her experience was. She could brand and execute. You can have all the great strategies, but you’ve got to be able to execute.”
