There was one clear message from the Detroit Pistons at the opening of their new headquarters Monday: Everyone is welcome. The Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center is in the New Center area about two miles north of Little Caesars Arena, where the franchise will begin its third season later this month.
Detroit Pistons Owner Tom Gores and Livonia, Mich.-based Schostak Brothers & Company today announced the formation of a joint venture to redevelop the Palace of Auburn Hills and its surrounding land. Schostak Brothers will serve as the lead partner and manage the future mixed-use development, which is expected to include corporate office, research & development and technology companies.
Mr. Gores and the Detroit Pistons Foundation first helped bring Vision To Learn to Detroit in 2017, and they are now expanding the partnership to Flint.
The funding commitment comprises a $1 million personal pledge from Mr. Gores, who is Chairman and CEO of investment firm Platinum Equity and owner of the Detroit Pistons, and a $1 million grant from the Consumers Energy Foundation.
Funding is being provided by the NBPA Foundation and by Mr. Gores, owner of the Detroit Pistons and a Flint native who created FlintNOW as a private sector initiative to support a broad range of short and long-term relief efforts.
In connection with the partnership, 8,000 “nutrition backpacks” will be distributed on June 6 to Flint public school children in grades K-6. Each bag will include $15 in Flint Farmers’ Market gift certificates (three $5 gift certificates), information about healthy eating, nutrition and lead, and a mini basketball.
The centerpiece of Moving Flint Forward is the Genesee Chamber Foundation’s new charitable fund created to provide financial support for small businesses, minority-owned businesses, North Flint redevelopment and activities that encourage tourism.
The event drew more than 1,500 donations totaling $566,982. A pledge from Mr. Gores to match the funds raised from today’s event helped encourage people to give and pushed the final tally to $1,133,964.
