Joe D: New Owner ‘Absolutely Great’
February 22, 2012
In an article posted on NBA.com, former Pistons basketball star and current Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars commented on a conversation he recently had with former basketball star and Charlotte Bobcats majority owner, Michael Jordan, about the Pistons new owners and Tom Gores.
“Michael and I were talking out in the parking lot after the game,” Dumars commented. “He asked, ‘How are those guys?’ and I said, ‘They’ve been great. You know, I’m really fortunate to have those guys, because you never know how ownership is going to turn out. It could not have turned out better, for myself and for all of us.'”
Gores has stated that his ultimate mission is to not only restore the Pistons to NBA elite status, but also to use his ownership of the franchise to do good in Detroit. The “Come Together” program, recently announced by Tom Gores and the Pistons and reported on NBA.com, celebrates community champions from across Michigan by giving them tickets to Detroit Pistons home games.
“[The new owners are] totally on board with rebuilding this the right way,” Dumars told NBA.com. “We want to win, but…they know it doesn’t happen overnight. Knowing how to build companies–that parallels with how to build a team. They totally get it.”
The article also notes that in June, Gores spoke at his introductory press conference about being interested in creating value–not buying it. NBA.com notes that two recent Pistons’ lottery picks, Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight, were huge steps in rebuilding the team the right way.
